How to calculate body mass

4- **Obesity or obesity** when the body mass index ranges between 30 and 35.

5- **Significant weight gain** when the body mass index ranges between 35 and 40.

6- **Excessive obesity** when the body mass index is higher than 40.

The equation for calculating the body mass index is considered one of the most popular methods because of its ease and simplicity. The equation was developed by the Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetlet nearly 150 years ago, and the equation depends on body weight and length.

**Body mass index calculator**

Body mass index = weight in kilograms / height * height in meters (height in meters squared).

From that, we note that the units of measurement used are kilograms and meters, so for example, with length, if it is in centimeters, then it must be converted to meters so that the calculation of the body mass index can be completed, as well as weight, it must be converted to kilograms if it is in grams.

Example: – A person whose height is 190 cm. When this height is entered into the equation for calculating the body mass index, this length is converted into meters, and this is done by dividing the height in cm by 100, as the meter equals 100 cm 190/100 = 1.9 meters

Now let’s calculate the BMI.

1- Give the person’s height, and after converting it from cm to meters, square this height, i.e. multiply it by itself.

1.9 * 1.9 = 3.61

2- After obtaining the square of the height, the weight is divided by the square of the height resulting from the previous step.

A person whose weight is 120 kg and is 1.9 meters tall, find his body mass.

Body mass = weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared = 120

/3.61 = 33.24

BMI = 22 * H2.

22 represents the ideal or recommended body mass, and H represents height in metres.
