hips, remove your outer clothing, put your feet together, and wrap a soft, straight measuring tape around the widest part of your hips. The hip measurement is the point where the end of the tape meets the remaining length.
Get an accurate hip measurement
Find a full length body mirror. Although the hips are easier to measure than other areas of the body, a mirror will help you make sure the tape isn’t crooked or uneven. So, you stand in front of one to get an analogy.
Take off your clothes. Take off your outer clothing, such as your overalls and shirt. You can leave thin underwear on and still get an accurate measurement. Wearing jeans or anything else that is too bulky will change the fit.
Put your feet together. Separating your feet can create a measurement that is actually larger than the thigh area. Put your feet together to take the measurement. At the very least, your feet should not be wider than your shoulders, but better together.

Know the difference between the waist and the hips. The natural waist is the smallest part of your torso, where your body sinks. Your hips are lower than that, and are usually wider than your waist. Hip measurement includes your butt and hips.
Find the widest point. Your hip measurements should be taken at where your hips are at their widest. That’s because when you take measurements, you’re trying to get an accurate representation of your body, and your hips are the widest point on your lower half. To accurately fit clothes, you need to find the widest point.
Using the tarp
hold a strip of tarp on one thigh. Hold one end over one hip. It doesn’t matter which side you start on. You can also pull it toward the middle if that’s easier for you. Just be sure to hold on to that end as you bring in the other end.
Go back. Wrap it around your butt, being careful not to twist it. Pull the tape to the other end of the other thigh. Make sure you get to the rear end at the same time.
Check in the mirror. Now that it’s wrapped around, check to make sure you got it right in the mirror. The bar should be parallel to the ground everywhere, and should not be curled up at all. Make sure it looks even.
Make it warm. When measuring, the tape should be snug around your hips. However, it should not be cutting off blood circulation. It should be tight enough that you can only put a finger under it, no more.
read the measurement. You can look down to see your measurement. You measure is where the end of the tape meets the tape measure number. You may need to look in the mirror to read the number more easily.
Type in the hip measurement. Now that you know what your hip measurement is, write it down so you can save it for later. You’ll also need other measurements to make the garment, such as bust, hip, thighs, waist, and inseam, depending on what you’re making.
Add a few inches when making clothes. When you make the clothes, you don’t factor in your exact measurements because they will be tight, which means they will be hard to move around. So, you have to add a few inches to make it more wearable.
